NAME: Kei
AGE: 19 years old
CANON: Ken ga Kimi
CANON POINT: After the Tokaido Wedding Parade Arc
CANON INFORMATION: due to the lack of a wiki I'll just summarize it all!
A few things regarding the setting of Ken ga Kimi should be noted. It takes place in the early Edo period in a place called Hinomoto, and currently Tokugawa Iemitsu is the Shogun.
Humans, Youkai and Oni live in Hinomoto. However, a war between the Human and Oni due to a famine caused a lot of strain on the relationship between the two. Because of the war, with the Humans’ victory they created the law of the sword hunt that stated Onis cannot wield swords.
The “Five Heavenly Swords” also exist to keep peace in Hinomoto, and Iemitsu created the Tournament of Sword Retrieval to pass down these swords to whoever wins the tournament. The winner of this tournament receives one of the Five Heavenly Swords and are granted the title Ichibangatana. A few things should be noted with these swords and the Ichibangatana title: unless you are chosen by the sword, you cannot take the sword out of its sheathe. These swords can also destroy and seal Youkai with the power of “kamioroshi”.
Ken ga Kimi’s story takes place when Kayo (the heroine) is asked to do the Tokaido Wedding Parade as a fake bride because she looks exactly like Hisahime. One purpose of the wedding parade is to secretly but safely transport Juzumaru, one of the Five Heavenly Swords, to Sunpu to the new Ichibangatana. Kei is one of the six guards that protects Kayo throughout the wedding parade!
Regarding Kei specifically, he is an Oni of the Kibi Province. He works as a roundsman in Edo, but wants to retrieve one of the Five Heavenly Swords from the tournament. It’s his goal to abolish the Law of the Sword Hunt and bring peace in between the Onis and Humans. He accepted the task of being a guard of the wedding parade for the money offered because he wanted to help Saburouza pay off his debt to a loan collector.
PERSONALITY:
A lot of Kei’s surface personality has a lot to do with his identity: being an Oni. If anyone finds out he was one it’d be very devastating, it’d put him and his family in danger which is why it makes it clear as to why he’s distant in the first place. Kei grew up with humans trampling over his life, destroying his home and the things he loved – except Kei doesn’t hate humans. Despite all he’s been through, he still believes in a world where both human and oni can exist together in peace so they both don’t have to live in fear and suffer anymore. Kei only merely thinks that the relationship between the two is strained and it’s possible to repair that. This is why Kei is very focus on power and says many times that power is important, this makes him seem power hungry, but Kei would never use swords and violence to get his point across. He wants power so he can win the tournament and abolish the Law of the Sword hunt so Oni can wield swords again. Basically, he wants power to accomplish his dream.
First thing’s first, upon meeting Kei you may not get the friendliest hello. When he first introduced himself to Kayo he kept it short and immediately reminded her not to slow them down so they can get to Sunpu as fast as possible. Naturally, to most people, Kei’s bristly and prickly attitude may come across as unpleasant. Speaking with a sharp tongue, he constantly reminds the guards of the wedding parade that they have a duty and there isn’t any time to be frivolous with conversations about food and souvenirs. Kei doesn’t beat around the bush and is very blunt with his words. Though, he has a habit of becoming frustrated easily and it escalates to a point where he even gets blatantly angry; he raises his voice and kicks the ground or punches a tree to grab attention. While a lot of his actions may seem unnecessary, to the point where people have to remind Kei to simply calm down, it does show how dedicated he is to his job, though. It’s clear that Kei is very hardworking and serious about his job which is why he can be trusted with them in the first place.
However, this unpleasant attitude makes him pretty difficult to interact with because he usually makes people think he doesn’t like them – this caused a big misunderstanding between him and Kayo at first.
It’s not that Kei dislikes people, but he just simply doesn’t know how to interact with them. Remembering that Kei is an Oni and he spent his life being pushed away by humans due to the strained relationship, Kei doesn’t interact with people that often; he’d rather keep his distance with people to protect his identity. Kei never bathed with the other guards, despite how the others thought it was weird how antisocial and distant he acted compared to everyone.
Behind that exterior, Kei’s described to be tricky to handle because he’s not honest with his feelings which is why he got into many arguments with Kayo because he’d rather raise his voice and yell at her than admit what’s wrong. However, Kei is very sincere and reliable. Kei is praised a lot and many people comment about how Kei’s presence keeps them calm because he does a great job keeping the streets safe as a roundsman.
Kei’s actually pretty clumsy when he’s not trying to be so distant. It’s easier to tell what he’s feeling through his actions rather than words because of this clumsiness. Kei has a habit to avert his gaze when he’s feeling down, or he scratches his hair in frustration when he doesn’t how to say what he wants to say. Kei actually gets embarrassed very easily, and it’s really easy to tell when he is embarrassed because his face will be red, he’ll go silent, or start stuttering his sentences. He looks away, trying to hide his red face, or he’ll snap out and call the other person an idiot if they dare to mention that he’s embarrassed in the first place.
Overall, Kei is a very determined person that doesn’t give up on his goal. He believes in a better world for everyone because he doesn’t want them to go through what he’s been through. He might be rude, unpleasant, and distant for the sake of keeping him and his secret safe, but in reality he’s a sincere and reliable person that can be counted on.
ABILITIES:
As an Oni, Kei has the ability to summon lightning! Basically summoning lightning through his hands, although you can see him combining this technique with his swords usually. Nothing too grand though, mostly sparks, and is able to send currents to his opponent and shock them.
Other than that, Kei is samurai which means he’s very talented with swords. He specifically dual wields two blades.

MEMORY ALTERATION: Kei’s going to be under the impression that he got into a fight with a Youkai by the river bank one night and fell into the water! So long story short, he bumped his head, swept away down the river while unconscious and suddenly… Woke up on this planet!?
SAMPLE:
[ When his feet finally sinks into land, Kei couldn’t help but let out a satisfied sigh. It’s been ages since he stepped on actual land, and he’s not counting that base even if his life depended on it. It’s too bustling for his taste and if he can get away from it he’d prefer it. He even popped out the seamoth as soon as he hit land just so he can make some distance. He feels much safer going out first anyway, just in case if there’s anything hostile that he might need to fight. If there’s one thing he’s good at it’s wielding his blades, so he can make himself useful with that at least.
Hopefully, he didn’t get a weird look considering how he wanted to get out of the seamoth as fast as possible… It’s not that he wants to get away completely, he just wants some space, which is almost hard to find at this rate.
And as of right now… There’s no time for a break. He plays with the rope around his neck as he watched the rest of the group also make their way onto the land and gasp at the new wonders… ]
Hey! We can look at this later, we need to get moving before we start fooling around!
[ He sounds irritated like usual, although that’s not his intention. Still, his loud voice ends up making people flinch nonetheless.
Doesn’t stop him from making a sour expression though. ]
Seriously… What a bother.
[ A small complaint to himself, but that’s just because he doesn’t really know much about camping on foreign islands. There’s also no way he’d admit that… That’d be kind of embarrassing! Back at home he’d just find the next town and rent a room in an inn. Although, living in Edo made his life easy considering he was a roundsman.
He rubs the back of his head and looks off into the territory that they could explore. Obviously, first things first, they need to set up a camp! And he looks back— ]
Are you guys not listening? Why are you playing around in the water?! [ He’s… Raising his voice again. ]
You can do that later, we have other things to focus on. If you fool around it’ll just slow us down. [ Wasn’t this supposed to be a fun camping trip!? Look at that, Kei doesn’t know how to have fun. Well, he’s just too focused on the task at hand…
Someone finally tells Kei to calm down and that they were just harmlessly playing in the water, but he can only furrow his eyebrows and he turns away. ]
I’m just saying, we should get everything out of the way before you start playing! Saying things like that makes you sound like a child.
Geez… Just hurry up already, we should set up a camp. At least, I for one don’t want to sleep in the sand tonight.
[ He’s DONE with this. He just wants to get this out of the way! He’s going to start walking away to give a hint to follow and he’s not going to take another ‘no’ for an answer! Why can people be so childish… Do they not realize if they finish this stuff early they can play in the water as much as they want later? ]
