The Kharaa are actually a very strange species. We assume they, at one point, were a cohesive species, but after conquering and assimilating so many different species... Oh I'm getting ahead of myself. What I mean is that they use what they conquer, mutating them. The real Kharaa is the parasite that infects it. It's a type of bacteria, we think, but we aren't sure. Once inside it can change a species into whatever it needs through rapid mutation. A human-Kharaa hybrid will seem to know it was not a Kharaa once but no longer care, reduced to an animalistic state of mind and driven to conquest. There are no reports of any way to reverse it.

It is a worrying topic, so I understand not wanting to ask about it. I don't know if they would be here, though. One reason this planet was chosen was to stay out of their way.

Crystals? Those usually grow under high pressure and heat, so they would be found in deeper water, probably near thermal activity.

And would these crystals, hypothetically speaking, be able to power something like... let's say, a mega cannon?

Wow. Wow. One, I am not planning on building a goddamn mega cannon. I know you all doubt my intelligence in this poor excuse of a base, but I'm not stupid. And two, even if I were, I could definitely do it on my own? I am almost eight sweeps old, I do not need a babysitter or help, URSULA.
