URSULA is usually available for brief contact. Consider this her inbox. Although she may be busy ICly doing something at the time, she can usually spare some time to answer something.

Alternately, you can link to a thread where she is being called upon. Note that she may ignore these calls or contacts dependent on her mood. Don't worry if she ignores you once or twice, as she will sometimes comment on open posts or make broadcasts to everyone.

Please label the day and time of the contact in the subject header.

For those curious, her voice sounds similar to this.

If any players wish to contact Naoko and her group, they are free to use this page. They will have to take the three hour trip by air or sea as there is currently no long-range communication in place for them. Please specify in the header that it is Naoko you are trying to reach and not URSULA, in this case, as well as labeling the date you are contacting the group.

That's right. She operates the base that we use as our main residence. I've heard references to her in the data files we've recovered, but mainly as an outdated AI. [Which he thinks is really rude? But.] I've been doing what I can to clear up the alterations made to her over the years and upgrade her for higher functionality.

[ Naoko crosses her arms. ]

I always wanted to study her. She was one of the first true AIs. We tend to historically consider her the start of the Golden Age of AI. Before that, everyone in the science thought AIs were probably going to stay a pipedream for a few decades or even another hundred years. God, I remember a headline about her calling her, "The Dream That Came True." Now we have AIs for everything.

[ It's no surprise someone who takes programming seriously would actually be interested in the history. ]

But since she's so old, her servers must be a mess. I can't believe they still work. Have you tried reversing her signal to track where it's coming from or is it cloaked? I figure it's the latter but I thought I'd ask.

[That's interesting, and Dirk puts that down in his memory. It explains why she comes up: she was one of the first ASis to be used. He isn't exactly jumping to let Naoko study her because he's very, very protective of his AI, but at least Naoko isn't insulting her like others have. That is a point in her favour.]

It's cloaked. You can imagine why finding them and moving her to something safer and more modern would be a priority of mine. She herself can't tell me where it's coming from. If you haven't seen anything, we'll just have to keep looking.

What about you guys? The Aurora logs said that you had an advanced military AI with you. Were you able to recover it, or have you been working from scratch for everything?

[ She's certainly keeping it in mind though. ]

Oh, ISHMAEL? He should be fine. Recovery isn't a priority since he's self-sustaining. He's... well-armed, so I have no doubts that he's safe. Contacting him is a priority since he needs orders. I have no clue what to tell him, though. Maybe kill those horrifying eel things that live around here. I prefer the jungle horrors to something that could eat me whole.

[ She's getting sidetracked by her hatred of Reaper Leviathans. ]

ISHMAEL should be fine. If you want to contact him, or try to at any rate, be my guest. He won't listen to you but he is set to protect people from threats. He was with someone else when the Aurora crashed and she's probably dead but killing him would take an army. They say he's going to win the war.

[ She doesn't sound convinced but she figures it might make them feel more at ease since they wanted to know about it. ]

How is he defended to be that invulnerable.

[That isn't even fishing for info that's. Kinda being a bit shocked here.]

[ She can't help being proud of that, even if she wasn't too involved. ]

A lot of money and resources went into him. He can teleport. It's hard to hit something that can be anywhere it wants. Which is... also why he's hard to contact right now. He could be halfway across the planet taking care of something he deemed a threat right now.

[LET DIRK LIVE. He's just kinda struck by this. He is still pretty confident his programming is more advanced, and yes they have teleporters where he's from, but he didn't expect this to go where it did.]

You aren't. Then he's contained in a weaponized body?

His 'body' is entirely compromised of nanites. He can be as large or as small as the nanites decide based on the situation. He can also create weapons as needed. The only effective strategy for fighting the Kharaa is to fight them on every level.

[NO FURTHER COMMENT. THAT IS IMPRESSIVE TECH.

Goddammit, is he going to have to protect the Kharaa from ISHMAEL too?]

[ She has a dreamy tone in her voice. ]

I mean that strictly as a programmer and avid lover of technology. Aren't you curious?

I am, but I'm also wary of an AI that operates entirely without reference to the thoughts of present humans. Any entity, human or otherwise, can become dangerous if it acts individually and has a great deal of power.

[And then Dirk gave the Uncle Ben speech.]

Not a fan of independent AI, huh?

I'm not a fan of any entity that can kill me without me standing half a chance.

[HE REALLY ISN'T, NAOKO. HE DID HIS TIME. HE DOESN'T ACTUALLY WANT TO DIE.]

He won't kill you. He's too smart to turn on a human. Yes, yes, I know, it's arrogant, but we have a lot of practice making AIs.

What are his key heuristics on that? I don't want to be suddenly determined a threat and taken out. Besides which, not all of our base is human. [He jerks a thumb to indicate Karkat.]

[ Naoko shifts her weight. She forgot about Karkat. ]

If I remember correctly, a threat is defined as anything that intends to attack a human being with lethal intent or major harm. So yeah, we do need to update him on your situation. He wouldn't attack them but he might not defend them. If he's smart enough, he might realise they need defending. I haven't worked with him much myself.

[Hm yeah, that definitely needs talking to. He's a little wary about talking to ISHMAEL, but if ISHMAEL already knows they're there, it would be worth clarifying the terms.]

Besides that, we have a lot of people who train together. He's probably smart enough to tell the difference most of the time, but as you're aware, some of us have unusual power sets.

Do you think he knows about us? Your group and mine both. We found a transmission from you and Michael, but the rest has been from crews of other ships. I don't know if there are any other Aurora survivors that he might have zeroed in on.

I don't know. [ She sighs, a little frustrated. ] I wish we had a way of communicating with him. There must be one but I just haven't thought of it. Honestly I'm this close to just triggering a large explosion to get his attention.

But if she survived, then Mimi Yun is who he'd find. She created him. [ There is a moment where she seems like she'll let something slide before she huffs and continues. ] A doctor, can you believe that? She had him programmed in tune to her so the military couldn't just take him without her permission or start any modifications without her presence. But she's a doctor, an amazing one. I can't get over that. With that kind of gift for programming...

[ Don't mind her inferiority issues. ]

At any rate, I should be in charge of him if Mimi isn't around but honestly? I don't know if she kept that chain of command intact or not.
